If, like me, the thought of booking a weekend away immediately comes with the question “Can we bring the dog?”, then you’re in the right place.
York is one of my favourite cities for a weekend away, and even better, it’s a brilliant destination to explore with your fur child. From wandering the historic streets to finding dog-friendly places for a drink, there’s plenty to do without having to leave your best friend at home. Over the years, I’ve stayed at a few different hotels in York with Beau, and these are three I’d definitely have on my list if you’re looking for the best dog-friendly hotels in York.
Whether you’re looking for a stylish boutique hotel, a spacious apartment-style stay or somewhere right next to York train station, these three are worth knowing about.

1. Hotel du Vin York
First up is Hotel du Vin York, and if you’re looking for a dog-friendly stay that still feels a little bit special, this is a lovely option.
Set in a beautiful Grade II-listed building on The Mount, Hotel du Vin has plenty of character and feels much more like a boutique getaway than your standard city hotel. The hotel has 44 individually styled bedrooms and suites, with plenty of those lovely historic details you want from a stay in York. And, importantly, your dog can come too.
Hotel du Vin has a dedicated dog package, currently priced at £25 per night for one dog or £40 for two. The package includes a dog bed, bowls, a mat and a treat bag with poo bags — so some of the essentials are already taken care of. Up to two small-to-medium dogs can stay in a room.
Dogs aren’t allowed in the main dining room, but there are alternative areas where dogs can join you, depending on availability. The hotel also has a courtyard and garden, which is always a bonus when you’re travelling with a dog.
I also love the location. You’re on The Mount, just a short walk from the historic centre, so you can head out and explore York before coming back to the hotel for a drink or a cosy evening.
Best for: A stylish, boutique-feeling dog-friendly stay.

2. Roomzzz York City
If space is important when travelling with your dog, Roomzzz Aparthotel York City is definitely one to consider.
Roomzzz York City is a serviced apartment-style property in a riverside location, giving you a little more space and flexibility than you might get from a traditional hotel room. The apartments come with kitchenettes, which is particularly handy if you’re travelling with a dog and want that more home-from-home feeling.
Roomzzz is very much designed with pets in mind. Pets are welcome, with a maximum of two pets per apartment. The current charge is £20 per pet per night for a short stay, or there is a one-off £50 fee for an extended stay, plus a £50 cleaning fee.
The riverside location is another big plus. Being close to the River Ouse means you can easily head out for a walk with your dog, and there are plenty of options nearby if you fancy exploring a little further. Roomzzz itself also highlights Rowntree Park, the river walks and York’s green spaces as great options for dog owners. And because you’re staying in an apartment rather than a traditional hotel room, I think this is a particularly good option for a longer weekend or if your dog appreciates having a little more room to settle in.
Best for: Dog owners who want space, flexibility and a home-from-home feel.

3. The Milner York
And finally, we have The Milner York — somewhere we recently stayed with Beau, and I completely understand why it has become such a popular choice for dog-friendly stays in York. The location is hard to beat.
The Milner is right next to York train station, making it incredibly convenient if you’re arriving by train, and you’re also within easy walking distance of the city centre. But for me, one of the biggest bonuses when travelling with Beau was the fact that there are gardens at the hotel.
There’s something very handy about being able to take your dog outside for a little wander or a morning sniff without immediately having to head out into the city. The Milner has selected dog-friendly bedrooms and currently charges a £30 supplement per dog, per night. The dog package includes a bed, food and water bowls. There is also a dedicated dog menu, which obviously Beau was very happy about.
One of my favourite things about our stay was that Beau could actually be part of the experience. Dogs are welcomed in certain areas of the hotel, including the Garden Room, where you can enjoy drinks and the hotel’s famous Chocolate Afternoon Tea. The hotel also has The Swollen Gambler, a relaxed bar just opposite York station, so you don’t have to leave your dog behind every time you fancy a drink.
And then there’s York itself. From The Milner, you’re perfectly placed to head into the city, explore the historic streets and find plenty of places to stop for a coffee, lunch or a drink.
Best for: A central York stay where your dog can genuinely be part of the experience.
Dog-friendly rating: 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Which is the best dog-friendly hotel in York?
Honestly, I think it depends on what you’re looking for.
For boutique luxury: Hotel du Vin York
For extra space and a home-from-home feel: Roomzzz York City
For location and a really dog-friendly hotel experience: The Milner York
All three offer something slightly different, which is why I think they’re worth having on your radar if you’re planning a dog-friendly city break in York.

Why York is so good for a dog-friendly city break
York is one of those cities that I think works particularly well with a dog. There are plenty of places to walk, from the River Ouse and York’s parks to the surrounding green spaces, and there are lots of dog-friendly cafés, pubs and restaurants where you can stop along the way.
The city itself is also incredibly walkable, so you can spend the day wandering without having to constantly jump in and out of a car. And let’s be honest — exploring somewhere new is always better when you have your best friend alongside you.
Planning a dog-friendly trip to Yorkshire?
If you’re looking for a dog-friendly hotel in Yorkshire, York is definitely somewhere I’d put on your list. It’s close enough for an easy weekend away, beautiful enough that you’ll feel like you’ve properly escaped, and there are plenty of dog-friendly places to stay.
These are three I’ve personally had on my radar, and I think each one would make a lovely base for exploring York with your dog. Because ultimately, the best kind of weekend away is one where nobody gets left behind.
Hotel policies, pet fees and dog-friendly areas can change, so I always recommend checking directly with the hotel before booking.
