I spent 10 years living in Leeds City Centre, and honestly, it was one of the best periods of my life. But as much as I love the city, I realised there’s so much more to explore. I didn’t really start venturing out much until I moved away, and now I’m inspired to share my top destinations—all within about two hours of Leeds. From quaint countryside villages and charming coastal towns to historic cities and hidden gems, there’s a whole world waiting just a short trip away in beautiful Yorkshire. So go and grab a coffee, cup of tea or a glass of wine (no judgement here) and let’s get to it.

Bolton Abbey & Stepping Stones
Have you ever explored the Yorkshire countryside? It’s one of my favourite places to discover in the UK. One of my top spots is Bolton Abbey, about a 45-minute drive from Leeds. If you’re travelling by train, you can get there using a combination of train and bus, since there isn’t a direct station. The closest stations are Ilkley or Skipton, both of which make a great starting point for a day trip.
On my last visit, I stayed at Catgill Farm, which is just nearby and offers both camping and glamping options. I’d highly recommend it if you want to turn your visit into a relaxing countryside escape — it’s the perfect base for exploring the area.
There are also the iconic stepping stones, which I still need to properly visit next time. Set across the River Wharfe, they make for that classic Yorkshire photo moment and are definitely one of the most recognisable spots in the area.
York
As you probably already know, York is one of my favourite cities to visit — and I really need to go more often. I already have a few blog posts live about York, especially if you’re visiting with your dog, as it’s such a dog-friendly city.
Less than an hour by train, York is the perfect destination for any history lover. You can wander through the medieval streets, explore the iconic York City Walls, browse independent shops and cosy cafés, and truly soak up the atmosphere. Don’t miss a stroll down The Shambles while you’re there — and make sure to grab some fresh fudge. It’s absolutely divine.
Harrogate
Harrogate is another firm favourite of mine — we even looked at moving there at one point because we enjoyed it so much. Just 30–40 minutes from Leeds, Harrogate is the ultimate relaxed micro-adventure.
With its beautiful gardens, a visit to the iconic Bettys Café Tea Rooms, and a chance to unwind at the historic Turkish Baths, Harrogate, is definitely one to add to your bucket list.

Haworth
Haworth is actually still on my bucket list — I haven’t been yet! It’s famously at the heart of Brontë Country. Around 45 minutes from Leeds, this charming village is a must-visit for anyone inspired by literature.
With its cobbled streets, independent bookshops, cosy pubs and beautiful countryside walks, it sounds exactly like my kind of place. I’ve seen so much content about this stunning spot and I honestly can’t wait to finally visit — so watch this space.
Scarborough
I remember taking Gareth to Scarborough for our first trip away together in the UK. The hotel looked incredibly impressive from the outside, but let’s just say it was definitely in need of some TLC on the inside. I honestly felt like I’d stepped straight back into 1999!
That said, once we looked past our questionable accommodation choice, we absolutely fell in love with the beach. It stretches on for miles and, from what I remember, is such a beautiful spot for a proper seaside stroll.
For a true Yorkshire coastal break, Scarborough is a classic. Just make sure to read the accommodation reviews before booking — a lesson I’ve definitely learned the hard way!
Saltaire
Saltaire is another spot on my list, and it’s only around 30 minutes away by train. It’s also a designated Saltaire World Heritage Site — something I didn’t even realise until recently!
With its thriving arts scene, scenic canal paths and great independent cafés, it sounds like the perfect little day trip. Sign me up — and watch this space for a full review once I’ve finally visited.
Knaresborough
Knaresborough is another firm favourite of mine. It’s just so beautiful — I genuinely think I could live here… preferably in one of those dreamy houses overlooking the river, please! Only around 40 minutes from Leeds, this charming market and spa town sits on the banks of the River Nidd.
From scenic riverside walks and exploring the ruins of Knaresborough Castle, to hiring a rowing boat on the river (so romantic), there’s plenty to do. I’ve also experienced some of the best customer service in hospitality here — and it’s super dog-friendly too, which is always a huge bonus.
Ilkley
Ilkley is only 30–40 minutes from Leeds and offers that iconic Yorkshire scenery we all love. Think steep hill walks, panoramic views and the cutest little pub waiting for you at the top — the perfect reward after the climb.
Beyond the countryside views, Ilkley also has a great mix of independent shops, cosy bars and a lovely atmosphere that makes it ideal for both a relaxed day trip or a full weekend escape.

You don’t need a long trip to feel like you’ve escaped — within a couple of hours of Leeds, there are landscapes, historic streets, coastal walks and countryside gems waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re soaking up steam‑era vibes in Harrogate, feeling medieval in York, or simply wandering a village and sipping coffee — these microadventures make the most of every hour you have.
Which one are you exploring first? Let me know in the comments! And, also please let me know if I am missing any, I might have to write a part 2!
