Switching Off: A Relaxing Staycation in Derby

I recently collaborated with this hotel on my social channels, but I wasn’t under any obligation to write a blog. I just wanted to share my Derby staycation experience in case you’re in the area and looking for a stay at the stunning Delta Hotels by Marriott Breadsall Priory Country Club, which is one of the oldest Marriott hotels in the world.

We arrived for check-in at 3 pm after a straightforward drive from South Yorkshire, and it couldn’t have been easier to get to the area. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by complimentary cookies, and an exceptionally friendly reception team. We even received a little tour, as we were told the hotel can feel a bit like a maze — and trust me, it’s huge! After settling into our room and freshening up, we headed out to explore a little before dinner.

Our reservation was at 7 pm, so we began the evening at the bar area of the Cast Iron Grill for what was meant to be a glass of wine… or perhaps a whole bottle! I instantly fell in love with the bar’s interiors—it had such a calming, welcoming vibe. Before we knew it, 7 pm had arrived, and we made our way to the dining area for dinner.

To start, I went for the Poke Bowl while Gareth opted for the prawns. For mains, I had the pumpkin ravioli—which easily deserves a 10/10—and Gareth, staying true to his roots, chose the Rib Eye steak. Dessert was a delightful trio: sticky toffee pudding, refreshing sorbet, and indulgent Baileys espresso martinis to round off the night.

The next morning, after sleeping like absolute champions, we headed down for breakfast — and honestly, it has to be one of my all-time favourite hotel breakfasts. There was literally something for everyone. I’m not usually a breakfast person, but the moment I’m away? Straight to the buffet at full speed. Anyone else?

One thing I completely forgot to mention at the beginning of this blog is that the hotel dates all the way back to 1266 — so if you’re a history buff, this one’s definitely for you. We spent time exploring the grounds and there was so much to see, from the indoor heated spa and swimming pool to not one but two 18-hole golf courses, and plenty more. We loved wandering around, taking it all in, and soaking up the atmosphere.

Later on, we headed to the Tempo Bar, right next to the Leisure Club, and ordered a cheeky glass of wine. Then, like a little miracle, the sun came out — so we dashed outside for some much-needed vitamin D, took in the views, and honestly, it was such a beautiful experience.

We didn’t book any treatments, and the weather was a little too unpredictable for a round of golf. We did take a look at the pool area, but it was quite busy, so we decided to head back and enjoy our beautiful room instead, before getting ready for another lovely evening at the Cast Iron Bar & Grill.

We decided to mix it up again and try something new — I went for the homemade butternut squash, which was absolutely incredible, while Gareth chose the squid. We then both opted for the hamburger, followed by sorbet and chocolate fondue. We finished the night with a Baileys espresso martini… are you getting déjà vu yet?

Just in case you’re thinking of visiting in the future, check-in is from 3:00pm and check-out is at 12:00pm — which I think are really decent times, especially the later check-out. You can also request a late check-in or check-out for an additional cost.

And if you fancy a relaxing evening in your room, the hotel also offers room service, which I think is a really nice touch.

This is the year I really want to embrace more UK staycations and seek out pet-friendly accommodation, so we can bring little Beau along with us. I do believe this hotel may be dog-friendly, but I’d definitely recommend double-checking beforehand if you’re hoping to take your fur baby with you. I’ve shared my full experience on my Instagram reel—check it out here.
