We visited York at the weekend, and after a week of eating fairly healthy, I was on the hunt for wine and chips (the perfect combination, if you ask me). My husband Gareth, our dog Beau, and I were looking for the best dog-friendly bars in York to relax and unwind. York is well known for being a dog-friendly city, but we wanted to avoid the busy city centre and discover some more relaxed, hidden gem dog-friendly bars in York a little further out but still in walking distance. That’s how we came across these three spots worth visiting.

The Bay Horse, Blossom Street – A Relaxed Dog Friendly Bar in York
As we walked into The Bay Horse on Blossom Street, we were immediately greeted by a great atmosphere, making it a perfect stop if you’re looking for a dog friendly bar in York with a relaxed, welcoming feel. Beau quickly made a new friend with a little Chihuahua inside, which set the tone for a really chilled and friendly visit.
The pub has a classic British feel, with a sun-trap beer garden that’s ideal for enjoying drinks on a warm day. It’s a great spot if you’re searching for relaxed dog friendly places in York away from the busier city centre.
Although they weren’t serving food on the day we visited due to a private function, it didn’t take away from the experience at all. We still enjoyed a lovely glass of white wine in the sunshine, making it a perfect slow afternoon stop.
It’s clearly a very dog friendly bar, with water bowls provided for dogs and even a humorous sign outside that reads “dogs welcome, people tolerated.” The atmosphere was super chilled, and the staff were incredibly friendly, even taking time to give Beau some attention, which made the visit feel even more welcoming.
If you’re looking for dog friendly bars in York with a relaxed beer garden, friendly staff, and a laid-back atmosphere, The Bay Horse on Blossom Street is definitely worth a visit.

Gibsons, Micklegate – A Cosy Dog Friendly Bar in York Serving the Best Chips
We fell into Gibsons on Micklegate, just a short walk down from The Bay Horse, and it instantly felt like our kind of place. It has a really quirky beer garden, which is exactly our vibe and makes it a great stop if you’re looking for a relaxed dog friendly bar in York.
From the beer garden, you can also see the York city walls, making it a brilliant spot for drinks, food, and a bit of people-watching—one of my favourite things to do when exploring York. Inside there was sports on, so we practically had the outdoor area to ourselves, which I certainly wasn’t complaining about.
The weather was a bit hit and miss, but we arrived at just the right time with the sunshine coming out. A glass of white wine was calling, along with chips and halloumi fries, and both were absolutely delicious. If you’re searching for dog friendly bars in York with great food and outdoor seating, Gibsons is a must-visit.
The service was great throughout, and the chips were genuinely some of the best we’ve had—especially when enjoyed with lovely views of the York city walls from the beer garden.

The Fox and Roman, Tadcaster Road – The Perfect Spot for Dinner and Chilled Vibes in York
We started to get a little hungry and decided to take a beautiful walk down Tadcaster Road, where you can enjoy views of the racecourse and open green fields—perfect if you’re looking for things to do in York with your dog and want a peaceful walk away from the city centre.
The Fox and Roman is a well-rated pub on Tadcaster Road, and we were really pleased to find that one half of the pub is very dog friendly. There were water bowls available and a few other dogs inside, which created a really welcoming atmosphere for dog owners. It’s a great option if you’re searching for a dog friendly pub in York for dinner with a relaxed vibe.
We ordered the chicken parmigiana, which was absolutely out of this world—I’m still thinking about it now—and Gareth had the chicken burger, which was also really delicious. The food definitely exceeded expectations and made it a perfect dinner stop after a day exploring York.
Of course, we finished off in style with a glass of wine, rounding off the day in a chilled, friendly setting.
