If you’ve ever thought about becoming a content creator, starting a YouTube channel, launching a blog or even trying something completely new in your career, but that little voice in your head has told you “I’m too old for this” — I want to simplify something for you.
You’re not too old.
And I’m writing this as a 40-year-old who is only now starting to take content creation seriously. For years, I wondered whether I had missed my chance. Whether content creation was a young person’s game. Whether people would actually want to listen to what I had to say.
But the more I think about it, the more I realise that getting older might actually be one of the things that makes my story worth sharing.

I started blogging in my 30s
I’ve been dabbling in content creation for around 10 years. It started as a side hustle alongside my full-time career in social media and marketing. I was blogging, creating content and experimenting with different platforms, but it was always something I did alongside my “proper” job. And honestly, I never really saw it as something I could turn into a full-time career.
Fast forward to now and I’m 40. And, perhaps ironically, I’m more excited about content creation than I’ve ever been.
I’ve worked with some incredible brands, created content that I’m genuinely proud of and realised just how much I actually love doing this. It feels a little strange to say that I’m still figuring it all out at 40, but I am.
And I think that’s the point.

I’m 40 and I’m still figuring it out
I’ve only been freelance since November last year, and this year has been one huge learning curve. There have been some amazing opportunities and moments where I’ve thought, “Wow, I’m actually doing this.” There have also been moments of doubt.
My social media channels aren’t currently enough to support me as a full-time creator, so I still work with clients alongside my own content, particularly within social media, marketing and content creation. The dream? To eventually become a full-time content creator.
And there’s another thing I’ve wanted to do for the longest time…
YouTube.
Yes, I’m scared to start YouTube
I’ve wanted to delve into the world of YouTube for years. And yet, I’ve found a million reasons not to start.
What if nobody watches?
What if nobody cares?
What if I’m too old?
What if everyone else is already doing it?
What if I’m starting far too late?
And then I had to ask myself: what if I just started anyway? Because the truth is, there will always be a reason not to do something. There will always be someone younger, more established, more experienced or further ahead.
But none of that means there isn’t space for you.
There is an audience for you
This is something I wish I’d realised years ago. Not everyone wants to follow a 20-year-old. Not everyone wants to hear from someone who is at the beginning of their career or life.
Some people want to hear from someone who has lived a little. Someone who has changed careers. Someone who has built a career, made mistakes, started again and is still figuring things out.
Someone who understands what it feels like to be 30, 40, 50 or beyond and wonder whether you can still start something completely new.
There is an audience for all of us.
You don’t have to appeal to everyone.
You just have to find the people who connect with you.

Being older isn’t a disadvantage
I actually think there are some huge advantages to starting content creation later in life.
You have experience. You have stories. You have opinions. You’ve probably learnt a lot about yourself. You know what you like and, perhaps even more importantly, what you don’t like.
You’ve experienced different jobs, relationships, friendships, failures, successes and changes. All of those things can become part of your content.
And you don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not. At 40, I’m much more comfortable being myself than I was at 20.
And maybe that’s exactly what makes this the right time for me.
You don’t need to have it all figured out
I think we put so much pressure on ourselves when we start something new. We think we need the perfect branding.
The perfect camera.
The perfect niche.
The perfect Instagram feed.
The perfect website.
The perfect plan.
But sometimes you just need to start.
I’m still learning. I’m still figuring out what content I want to create, where I want to take my platforms and whether YouTube will become the next big part of my journey.
I don’t know exactly where this is going to take me. And actually, I’m okay with that.
So, are you too old to become a content creator?
Absolutely not.
If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, becoming a YouTuber, creating content on social media, launching a podcast, changing careers or simply trying something you’ve always wanted to do, please don’t let your age be the reason you don’t start.
You might not become an overnight success. You might have to learn a completely new set of skills. You might have moments where you question what you’re doing.
I certainly do.
But imagine looking back in five years and knowing that you started. That you gave yourself a chance. That you stopped worrying about whether you were too old and decided to see what could happen instead.
I’m 40, and I’m only just getting started. And honestly? I think that’s pretty exciting.
So if you’ve been waiting for a sign to start that thing you’ve been thinking about…
This is it.
It’s never too late to start something new.
