What Quitting My 9–5 Actually Taught Me | My Freelance Journey

If you’d asked me a few years ago whether I’d ever leave my 9–5 to work for myself, I would’ve said absolutely not.

I loved the stability, the routine, and being part of a team. In fact, at the beginning, I genuinely had one of the best jobs I could’ve asked for. I loved what I did, I enjoyed the people I worked with, and I felt like I was building a career I was proud of.

But around two years in, everything changed.

I won’t go into too much detail, but the company culture slowly started to shift. The environment that had once been positive became one that no longer felt like the place I’d joined. The energy changed, and with it, so did my happiness.

It got to the point where I realised I had a choice.

I could stay because it felt safe.

Or I could take a chance on myself.

It sounds like an obvious decision now, but at the time it felt huge. Walking away from a monthly salary and the security of employment wasn’t something I took lightly.

But the moment I handed in my notice…

I felt relief.

Not panic. Not regret.

Relief.

It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. For the first time in a long time, I felt free. Free to create something for myself, free to build a business on my own terms, and free to rediscover why I fell in love with social media in the first place.

Eight months later, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I now have two amazing freelance clients, and although freelancing definitely comes with its challenges, it’s completely changed the game for me.

I’ve realised that quitting my 9–5 wasn’t just about changing jobs.

It changed the way I see myself.

I learned that comfort isn’t always where growth happens.

It would’ve been easier to stay.

To keep collecting a salary and convincing myself things might improve.

But sometimes staying in the familiar can stop you from discovering what you’re actually capable of.

The biggest growth I’ve experienced has happened outside my comfort zone.

I learned that confidence comes from taking action.

People often think confidence comes first.

For me, it came afterwards.

Every proposal I’ve sent, every client meeting I’ve walked into, every invoice I’ve issued has made me believe in myself a little bit more.

You don’t wake up feeling fearless.

You become fearless by doing the things that scare you.

I learned that freedom is worth so much more than I realised.

One of the biggest gifts freelancing has given me is freedom.

The freedom to choose the projects I work on.

The freedom to work in a way that suits me.

The freedom to build a business that reflects my values instead of someone else’s.

That feeling is something I never want to lose.

And I’ve realised… this is only the beginning.

Beanbags

As much as I love growing my freelance marketing business, I know it’s not my end goal.

My dream has always been to build my own personal brand through content creation.

I want to consistently create content across my social media channels. I want to start YouTube. I want to document the journey, share what I’m learning, and hopefully inspire other people who are considering taking a leap of their own.

The only thing standing in my way now?

Me.

No difficult boss.

No toxic workplace.

No company culture.

Just me finding the courage to press record and get started.

And maybe that’s the next lesson.

Sometimes the biggest thing holding us back isn’t our circumstances anymore—it’s the stories we tell ourselves about why we should wait.

So here’s my promise to myself.

I’m going to stop waiting for the perfect time.

I’m going to start creating.

Because if quitting my 9–5 has taught me anything, it’s this:

The life you want isn’t built by waiting until you’re ready.

It’s built by trusting yourself enough to begin.

Here’s to betting on yourself.

It might just be the best decision you ever make.
