5 Things To Do When Visiting York

Ever since we relocated to the countryside, we’ve been enjoying weekend adventures and exploring more. Back when we lived in Leeds city centre, we hardly ever ventured outside the city because everything we needed was right at our fingertips and there was always something happening. But now, with the move, I find so much peace in the suburbs that I actually crave the hustle and bustle of city life on weekends. So, Gareth, little Beau, and I decided to hop on the train to York for a fantastic day filled with delicious food, sightseeing, and exploration. York is one of my top favourite cities in the UK, and I haven’t had the chance to visit since lockdown. Here are a few must-do activities when you’re visiting York – make sure to check them off your bucket list. Let’s do this!

Visit York

Walking The York’s City Walls

The City Walls of York are a must-see when visiting the city. They are the longest medieval town walls in England, spanning 3.4 kilometres. You can access them for free and take a leisurely walk around the walls at any time of the year. The Friends of York Walls provide a helpful online guide with maps and pictures to help you navigate the City Walls Trail. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the historic walls and enjoy the stunning views of York’s interesting buildings along the way. You can literally see the walls when you step out of the train station.

The Charm Of The Shambles

The Shambles is the cutest street filled with beautifully maintained medieval structures, with some dating as far back as the 14th century. This street is famous for its narrow alleys and timber-framed buildings that hang over the street. There are various lovely shops to explore, such as Roly’s Fudge Pantry – this is a must-visit for fudge enthusiasts.

SPARK For All The Foodie Delights

SPARK* is a vibrant and dynamic urban initiative that brings creativity to the heart of York and is located on Piccadilly. It provides a platform for local entrepreneurs, artists, and residents to collaborate. I have tried out various vendors there, and I must say, I’ve been impressed by each one. With its diverse range of food and drink choices and its dog friendly, it truly is the best place to be.

Discover York’s History With The York Dungeons

I visited this place a few years back and I have to admit, I was a bit scared haha! But everything turned out fine. They called me a sinner and locked me in a cage for 5 minutes, but being the angel that I am, I was let out pretty quickly. The York Dungeon features an incredible group of actors, special effects, stages, and scenes. It’s a truly immersive experience with dark corners, sudden scares and loud noises.

Go Shopping

If you enjoy shopping every now and then like me, York is the place to be. It offers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Whether you’re searching for a unique gift, treating yourself, or spoiling a loved one, York is the ultimate destination for some retail therapy. The city boasts a variety of designer stores, independent shops, and boutiques spread across its charming winding streets, each area with its own specialty.
