So it was our anniversary coming up and I had decided that I wanted to surprise my fiancé with a night away in York. I am totally in love with York and everything Yorkshire so I thought this would be the perfect setting to celebrate. I decided to book a room at the Hilton Hotel as it was a great location and had incredible views.
With it being our anniversary I decided to book the Burlington Room, and I must say our stay was incredible from start to finish. There was a beautiful little hamper full of goodies when we arrived, (and that for me, the little touches always make a difference). We had a private balcony with a view overlooking Clifford’s Tower and at night it was just magical. The service was just amazing, really friendly and always happy to help.
After we had checked in, we decided to go and explore the beautiful sites of York. We stopped off for a morning hot chocolate at the quirky family run cafe The Nook, which has the best hot chocolate that I have had in a long time ( perfect timing as we escaped the rain).
I have visited York a number of times, but I have never gone to the York Dungeon (this I am ashamed of, as I should have gone much sooner) it’s just incredible from start to finish! The history, the dungeon itself, the talented actors, I just can’t rave about this place enough. You must make sure you pay the dungeons a visit. A bit of advice pre-book your tickets before hand online at their website, so you can fast track to the front of the queue.
After you have visited the Dungeon why don’t you call for a beer at The Kings Arms just down by the river. It’s a perfect location, great service and a stunning bar. Make sure you draw money before hand as they don’t take cards. After finishing our delicious drinks, we went to explore a little more and came across a market where we found Auntie Emily’s Fudge (tastes like little drops of heaven). I love fudge and always struggle to find one that I really like, however I was hooked after selecting an array of different flavours. Make sure you like her Facebook page to keep up to date to where they are going to be next.
Evening time had come and it was time to go back to our incredible room at the Hilton York and freshen up for the evening. We opened a bottle of wine and took in the view of Clifford’s Tower.
We headed out to a place called Lendal Cellars, which came recommend to me. I had seen photographs of this place before so I was super excited to go and check it out. It has that underground effect and feels like your in a cave. It was so quirky, I loved everything about it. From all the lights, the amazing food (the sharing platters are amazing), to the incredible service that we received, there is no doubt in my mind that I will be heading back there as soon as I am back in York.
Morning had come and I was very sad as it was our last day in York. We went and had breakfast in the hotel and it was delicious. It was a traditional buffet style breakfast, as well as croissants, cakes and continental buffet with all your different hams and cheeses.
I must talk about the amazing bar, called Thomas of York. It is one of my favourite places to visit whenever I am in town. I love its quirkiness, the amazing food and the unique cocktails that they have to offer (nothing like you have ever had before) . I can’t wait to go back and try more of their menu.
Jamie Oliver’s restaurant is another amazing place to go and visit for some lunch, their home made pasta is superb and they make a mean Campari spritz.
All in all my stay in York was fantastic, thanks to the Hilton York for looking after us so much so that I will be staying again next month. Thanks to all the incredible places that I visited, and can’t wait to return to explore more. If you are looking for a weekend break away, then I can’t recommend York enough.
