Here we are with another wedding post! I’m just not ready to let go of the newlywed feeling just yet and I know you secretly love these posts right? Right! I honestly didn’t realise how important planning your wedding music for the big day actually was until it came to ours. Choosing the song that you’re going to walk down the aisle to, your first dance, throwing the bouquet and garter and not forgetting the tough choice between a band and a DJ. The list is never ending!
Don’t get me wrong, I think a band is awesome at a wedding but for me I always knew that I wanted a DJ and as soon as we met our DJ for the first time last year, we booked him straight away. We met Aris in Rethymno at our hotel last year the day after we had visited the venue. We knew instantly that we wanted him to be our DJ and if you’re getting married in Crete, I honestly couldn’t recommend him enough. Not only was he super professional but Gareth and I also gained a friend for life.
Within the year of planning our wedding we had a few Skype sessions with Aris, which really put my mind at ease. We also sent out an email to all our guests for them to choose 2 songs that they’d like to hear on the night and by doing this it meant that all our guests were happy and no one was bothering Aris too much. It’s safe to say that we had a huge mix of music on our wedding day which I personally think is fab. From the golden oldies to my favourite old school R&B tunes and the Pop Classics with a little bit of Rock thrown in, I think everyone loved the tunes.
Walking Down the Aisle
We decided on Broken Road by Gentri for the song that I’d be walking down the aisle to. The lyrics mean so much to both of us and it was just so emotional. As soon as I heard the music, I got butterflies and I literally just wanted to run to Gareth. When I reached the end of the aisle, I looked over at my bridesmaids and they were all in tears. Job done! haha! We didn’t want any traditional music and instead we chose the song that resonated the most with us. I have no regrets and every time I hear this song, it brings a tear to my eye.
Our First Dance
Gareth and I met working on cruise ships and that’s when we discovered that our song was “Crazy” by Aerosmith. We knew this was going to be our first dance song however, I wanted something a little slower to dance to at the beginning so we decided to do a little mashup. We do like to keep things interesting! We started off dancing to a version of “The Reason” by Calum Scott & Leona Lewis which changed half way through to “Crazy”. I think our guests were a little confused at first, but after a few seconds, we asked our guests to join us. It was such a special moment. We decided on “The Reason” as I had asked my Google Home to play a Leona Lewis album whilst I was in the bath and the reason was the second song to play. I know the song isn’t an original by Leona Lewis but as soon as this version was played it gave me goosebumps. I kept shouting from the bathtub for Google to play it once again and when Gareth came home, I played it for him and he said it was the one.
Throwing The Bouquet
This is where it gets interesting! Gareth and I had not decided on any music for the throwing the bouquet and it wasn’t until Aris came over to ask that I panicked. I shouldn’t have as Aris had it handled and started throwing out recommendations all over the place. We went for Beyonce “Single Ladies” in the end. I personally think it was a fab choice!
Throwing The Garter
As far as I’m aware this isn’t a British tradition but with Gareth being South African, we decided to include it on our wedding day. Basically, it means that Gareth took my garter off with his teeth (yes, you read this right) and then he threw it into a bunch of potential bachelors. That was fun! Especially as his happily married Grandpa was the one who caught it. Classic!
OMG I am LIVING for your wedding posts – they are getting me through wedding planning! Also needed to read this, the only song that Dem has suggested so far is “started from the bottom now we’re here, by Drake” paha. More wedding content pleeaaase xox
