Top 10 Beaches in Yorkshire for a Perfect Seaside Day

It’s no secret that I’m a total water baby. I grew up in the Canary Islands right by the beach, and I’ve been obsessed with the sea ever since. Although I now live in Yorkshire, I’m not quite as close to the coast as I’d like — which makes me super sad! That said, there are so many beautiful beaches within driving distance that I love to visit, and this year I’m making it my mission to explore even more of Yorkshire’s seaside towns.

1. Scarborough Beach, Scarborough

No list would be complete without Scarborough. Divided into North Bay and South Bay, Scarborough offers two very different beach experiences.

South Bay is the classic seaside resort beach — golden sands, amusement arcades, fish and chips and more. It’s perfect for families and traditional bucket-and-spade days. North Bay, on the other hand, is quieter and popular with surfers thanks to its stronger waves. Overlooking it all is the dramatic headland crowned by Scarborough Castle, adding a historic backdrop to your beach day. I know Scarborough might not be everyone’s cup of tea but the beach is really pretty.

2. Whitby Beach, Whitby

There’s just something about Whitby that keeps you coming back. Maybe it’s the mix of seaside charm and gothic drama, or maybe it’s simply the smell of fish and chips in the sea air — either way, it’s one of those places that feels special every single time you visit.

Whitby Beach stretches out beautifully from the harbour, with wide sands at low tide that are perfect for long walks, paddling, or just sitting and listening to the waves. It’s the kind of beach where you can wander for hours without realising how much time has passed. And of course, no trip to Whitby is complete without climbing the famous 199 steps to see the abbey towering above the town — the views alone are worth it. Whether you’re there for a cosy autumn walk or a sunny summer day, Whitby always seems to have that comforting, nostalgic feel that makes it incredibly easy to fall in love with.

3. Flamborough North Landing, Flamborough

The first time I visited Flamborough was when Beau was just a tiny puppy, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I just remember arriving and being completely blown away by the cliffs — they’re so dramatic and white they almost don’t feel real.

North Landing feels a little more rugged and tucked away than some of the bigger seaside towns, which I love. It’s the kind of place where you can park up, grab a coffee (or in my case, chase after an overexcited puppy at the time), and just take in the view before heading down to the beach.

I also remember there being a little burger van there — and it was super cheap! There’s something so simple and nostalgic about standing by the sea with a burger in hand after a windy walk. It’s not fancy, but that’s kind of the charm. It feels real, relaxed, and completely unpretentious.

Whether you’re going for the coastal walks, the bird spotting, or just a peaceful wander by the water, Flamborough has that quiet beauty that sneaks up on you — and for me, it’ll always remind me of those early puppy days by the sea.

4. Filey Beach, Filey

I have to admit — I haven’t actually made it to Filey Beach yet… but it’s very high on my list this year. Every time I see photos of Filey, I wonder why I haven’t gone sooner.

What really draws me to Filey is how peaceful it looks. Unlike some of the busier seaside spots, it seems to have this wide-open, calm feel — the kind of place where you can properly switch off. The beach stretches for miles, which means no fighting for towel space and plenty of room for long walks along the shoreline.

It strikes me as the sort of beach you go to when you just want fresh air, a good walk, and maybe a coffee while you sit and watch the waves. No big agenda, no rush — just simple seaside vibes.

Safe to say, this is one I’ll definitely be ticking off soon.

5. Robin Hood’s Bay Beach, Robin Hood’s Bay

I’m almost embarrassed to say I haven’t made it to Robin Hood’s Bay yet — especially because it looks exactly like the kind of place I’d love.

Every photo I see shows those charming cottages tumbling down towards the sea, with little winding streets that feel like something out of a storybook. It seems like one of those places where you park at the top, wander down slowly, and end up staying longer than you planned.

The beach itself looks perfect for exploring rather than just sitting. This is another one firmly on my Yorkshire beach list, and I have a feeling once I finally go, it’ll become a regular spot.

6. Runswick Bay, Runswick Bay

Runswick Bay is another one that’s firmly on my list this year. Every time I see photos of those little white cottages scattered along the hillside leading down to the sea, I think, how have I not been yet? It looks like the kind of place that feels peaceful the moment you arrive — less arcades, more sea air and slow mornings. I can already picture a long coastal walk, a coffee in hand, and just taking it all in.

It gives me the same adventurous-but-peaceful energy as Robin Hood’s Bay, and I have a feeling once I finally visit, it’ll become one of those “why didn’t I come sooner?” places.

7. Bridlington South Beach, Bridlington

I honestly can’t believe I haven’t properly explored Bridlington yet — because everything about it sounds like such a classic British seaside day out, and I love that kind of vibe.

Bridlington South Beach looks like one of those places where you can fully embrace the traditional seaside experience: long stretches of sand, a proper promenade walk, maybe an ice cream even if it’s not quite warm enough, and just that cheerful, nostalgic atmosphere. It feels like the kind of beach that doesn’t try too hard — it just is what it is.

I can imagine it being perfect for a slow summer afternoon, wandering along the shore, shoes in hand, with no real plan other than enjoying the fresh air. It’s definitely one I’m really excited to visit, and I have a feeling it’ll end up being one of those easy, reliable go-to spots when you just fancy a seaside fix.

8. Cayton Bay, Near Scarborough

Cayton Bay is one of my favourite spots along the Yorkshire coast — and honestly, Scarborough isn’t for everyone, I know, but I really love the beaches here. It feels more relaxed than the busy town beaches (in parts) and has a slightly wild, untouched vibe that I can’t get enough of.

9. Sandsend Beach, Sandsend

Sandsend is one of those beaches that instantly makes you breathe a little easier. I haven’t been here as much as I’d like, but every time I drive past or see photos, it looks like the perfect escape from the busier spots on the Yorkshire coast.

The beach stretches for miles, and the sand is soft underfoot — ideal for long walks with your dog, a friend, or even just yourself. I love the idea of wandering along the shoreline, listening to the waves, and stopping to watch the tide roll in without feeling rushed.

The little village of Sandsend adds to the charm too. With a handful of cosy cafés overlooking the sea, it feels intimate and unpretentious — the kind of place where you can grab a coffee, sit for a while, and really take it all in. It’s exactly the kind of quiet seaside spot I love, and I really need to make a proper trip there soon.

10. Fraisthorpe Beach, Near Bridlington

I haven’t actually been to Fraisthorpe Beach yet, but it’s definitely on my Yorkshire beach bucket list. From what I’ve seen, it’s one of those wide, open beaches that feels like the perfect place to escape — no crowds, no rush, just sand, sea, and fresh air.

I can already imagine the relaxed vibes: a gentle stroll along the sand, maybe a little picnic, and that sense of freedom that only comes from being somewhere open and by the sea. It’s definitely one I need to visit soon, and I have a feeling I’ll end up loving it.

What makes Yorkshire’s beaches stand out is their variety. In one day, you can explore dramatic chalk cliffs, hunt for fossils in historic fishing villages, relax on wide sandy shores, and enjoy all the nostalgia of a traditional British seaside town.

Places like Scarborough, Whitby, and Flamborough each offer a completely different coastal experience — from lively resort fun to rugged natural beauty. Whether you prefer bustling promenades or quiet hidden coves, Yorkshire’s coastline has a beach that suits your style.

From the classic charm of Scarborough and Whitby to the dramatic cliffs of Flamborough and the peaceful beauty of Runswick Bay, Yorkshire’s beaches truly offer something for everyone.

Whether you’re planning a summer holiday, a weekend escape, or simply a bracing winter walk along the shore, these top 10 beaches showcase the very best of the Yorkshire coast.

So pack your walking boots, grab some fish and chips, and discover why Yorkshire’s seaside continues to capture hearts year after year.
