Why Barbados Has Been Added To The Bucket List

When I worked on cruise ships, I was very fortunate that the Caribbean was part of my itinerary. Visiting the beautiful islands of St Maarten, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, the stunning island of Barbados was unfortunately not on the list. When I met my now husband (still so weird saying this) Gareth, he mentioned that his Aunt Sandy and Uncle Peter lived on the island, so I knew that I would finally get my chance to visit Barbados. Six years down the line and I’m still waiting for my trip Mr. This is why I have added Barbados to my never ending bucket list.

To be fair, over those 6 years, Gareth and I have lived in different countries, travelled Europe & Australia and recently got married in Greece so it’s never really been the right time. Barbados became a distant memory, until I recently attended the #BlogAtTheBeach event with icelolly.com. The event was in collaboration with Visit Barbados and as soon as Marc’s speech started, I knew that I just had to organise a trip to Barbados at some point very soon and here’s why…

Barbados Is More Than Just Beaches

Barbados of course has the most stunning beaches and clear blue ocean, but that’s not the only thing that this beautiful island has to offer. With caves, museums and wildlife reserves (among other attractions), the opportunities to branch out and have a few days off from the beach are endless. If I’m being completely honest, I genuinely did think that Barbados just a beach destination vacation in paradise but I couldn’t be more wrong.

Where Is The Rum?

The rum in Barbados has built a reputation of being the smoothest, finest and most delicious in the Caribbean. Gareth can vouch for this as when he went to visit his family over there (before my time of course), rum was the only thing he actually drank. I mean literally! I think I would feel right at home in Barbados with one of their famous rum cocktails in hand. Fun fact – did you know that there are over 1,500 Rum Shops in Barbados? I mean that’s super impressive. And oh yeah! before I forget, do not call them Rum Shacks, as Marc kindly stated it’s a Rum Shop. Don’t make that dude angry now!

Barbadian Cuisine

A typical meal in Barbados normally consists of a main dish containing meat or fish with a mixture of herbs and spices along with sweet bread and breadfruit. When I asked Gareth about Barbadian Cuisine, his first thought that came to mind was Rum Cake and why am I not surprised! To be fair, it looks pretty delicious and after Googling some images like the one below, this has made me want to Google flights and head out there for this cake alone. Marc, do you know how to make this? If so, I’m popping round.

Barbados Festivals

I had no idea of the amount of festivals that happen each year in Barbados. From food & rum festivals to chocolate festivals (sign me up please like yesterday) – this must be such an amazing experience if you’re lucky to enough to be there at that time of the year. I mean, I’m also pretty sure that it would be incredibly busy as well so I guess, it just depends on your preference.

The Best Time To Visit Barbados

The best time to visit Barbados is from December through to early April where temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees every day. Wow! Avoid the rainy season which is from June to October. Marc actually gave me us all a little tip, which I’m not sure if I can share with you but I’m going to anyway! Marc says that the perfect time to visit is in May – I think May is such a beautiful time of the year anyway so he must be right.

Thank you so much to Marc at Visit Barbados and the great team at Ice Lolly for inviting me down, I had the best time, met some incredible people and learnt a lot about this little piece of paradise.

Although this was a press event, this is not a sponsored post and I was under no obligation to write a post.
